Legend has it that, upon tasting the latest product from the Huyghe brewery, he immediately declared: “If I keep drinking this, I’ll start to hallucinate!” Jean De Laet suddenly had an idea, ordered it to be immediately bottled in Cologne stoneware bottles, and commissioned a student to design the label in exchange for two cases of beer. Today, the label still tells this story, universally recognized as an allegory of alcoholic hallucination: pink elephants, dragons, crocodiles, and birds.
